Guacamole, The Mexican Avocado Dip That Is Easy And Healthy

Guacamole

What is guacamole?

It is the Mexican avocado dip that is usually eaten as a side dish or appetizer with tortilla chips. In the USA, it is quite commonly served alongside tacos, burritos, enchiladas and any other Mexican style dinner.

Basically, it consists of mashed fresh avocados that are mixed with tomatoes, chiles and spices. You can add anything you want, usually this includes onions, garlic, peppers, lemon or lime juice and cilantro. Mango, peach and pineapple also go quite well with guacamole.

Why is is called guacamole?

According to an online etymology site, it is from the native Mexican words for avocado and mole. Mole is a dark sauce that is very common in Mexico and varies from region to region. So, it is an avocado sauce from Mexico that most people use as a dip.

Very often, children and adults who don't like anything different than what they are used to, are put off by the  appearance of guacamole dip. If you can get them to try it they are almost always very pleasantly surprised to discover that it does not taste like it looks. In fact, it is quite tasty and they likely will return for seconds or thirds.

How to serve guacamole

A good way to serve the dip is to put out a serving dish or two with spoons so diners can spoon it onto their plates. You don't want any double dippers spoiling it for the others!

It is good with chips, as a dip, or as a garnish on just about anything. It goes great with tacos, burritos, enchiladas, tostadas, seafood, beef, chicken and pork. You can scoop it on top, or make it an essential part of the dish, either way it is delicious and seems to bring out additional flavors.

The easiest way to serve it is simply with tortilla chips. You can put it in small bowls, alongside the salsa. When served with red wine or beer it is almost always very popular. Take it to a pot-luck or party as an appetizer and just watch it disappear.

This dip is also very nutritious and healthy. Take it to any sporting event, Super Bowl

How to spice it up

The easiest way is to add cayenne pepper to the dip. You can experiment with hot sauces or even salsa, but sometimes these give it a strange color and make it appear unappetizing.

My personal favorite way is to chop up jalapeño and habanero peppers very fine and add them to the dip. Just be careful not to make it too hot for your guests or family. Also, make sure, very sure, that you thoroughly wash your hands after handling these peppers. Whatever you do, do not use the bathroom before washing your hands! I speak from personal experience!

Making Dinner Fast and Tasty: From Leftover to Makeover

By Lisa Barnes
Many people proclaim "my family doesn't eat leftovers." Is it the name "leftover"? I agree that doesn't sound so appetizing. These leftovers can be planned for convenience and get a "makeover" to create a new and delicious meal. "Makeovers" sound much more positive, and like a new beginning.

Cinco De Mayo Party Through Food, Decorations and Music

By Christine Szalay Kudra
Cinco de Mayo is a holiday, which we in the United States seem to have taken up with an enthusiasm, which eclipses that Mexicans have for this occasion. Like St. Patrick's Day, we have adopted this holiday as our own and taken what is mostly considered to be a holiday of regional importance in its homeland into a nationwide celebration; if nothing else, Americans certainly have a flair for celebrating holidays which few if any other nations...
